To help you understand the Customs and VAT procedures, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in partnership with HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC) have developed this free one day seminar.

This seminar will enable you and your business to:

  • Understand Customs and key VAT issues, learning how to get it right first time.
  • Be aware of the differences between the treatment of tangible goods and services for VAT purposes when trading with EC and internationally.
  • Obtain access to UKTI and Enterprise Europe Network support for your international activities.

The morning presentation includes:

  • Import and export – definitions and legal implications of these.
  • What documentation to use to declare an import or export.
  • The importance of valuation and establishing a ‘value for Customs purposes’.
  • A brief introduction to Customs relief schemes.
  • An introduction to the three volumes of the Tariff.
  • Establishing import charges in the Tariff.
  • Classification – how to do it and how to get help.
  • An explanation of EC preferences – how they can affect duty rates.

The afternoon presentation includes:

  • VAT – the difference between charging on goods and services.
  • The significance of the difference between international trade and EC sales.
  • What documents can be used to constitute proof of export.
  • A brief explanation of ‘Place of Supply’ – how the place where services are carried out can affect the charging of VAT.

Q&A forums will take place after both the morning and afternoon sessions.
