The main aim of this event is to bring together all stakeholders in the KBBE theme and build networks. Enterprise Europe Network and BioApproaches SW working closely with UKTI and South West of England Regional Development Agency are holding a special European bio-partnering  event in Tamar Science Park, Plymouth, PL6 8BX - Bioresource Exploitation, South West England and Iberia (Wednesday 25th March 2009).

This is as a follow on from the successful SW Bioresource Exploitation Forum September 2008 and the comprehensive report that began to articulate the region's strengths and commercial opportunity (attached). A draft programme is listed below (also attached). We will be contacting and inviting up to four key speakers from the Bioresource Forum to capture the headline opportunities from the report namely:

• Biocatalysis - the supply of unique biocatalytic products and services, including enzymes and chiral chemicals to the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals markets: £2Bn for enzymes; £1.5Bn for chiral chemicals
• New Chemical Entity (NCE) Discovery - screening culture collections to identify secondary compounds from the material and screening for novel bioactive compounds. Discovery market with various niches e.g.: cosmetics/personal care £3.5Bn; nutraceuticals £60Bn; pharmaceuticals £230Bn

The focal point on day 1 of the event will be low-carbon vehicle development in the UK and India. UK and India companies and organisations will come together in workshops to discuss collaboration in this area and agree a series of actions to take forward.  This initiative picks up one of the recommendations from the HM Treasury commissioned "King Review of Low-Carbon Cars Part II" that the UK forges closer links with international counterparts involved in low-carbon technological development.

This Autumn the European Commission has begun a full review of its flagship R&D funding effort, Framework Programme 7. The seven-year, €52.5 billion initiative is vital to the technological and scientific progress of thousands of universities, companies and research institutes – as well as to European competitiveness. The review will assess accomplishments and problems to date in FP7 and set the stage for mid-course adjustments in spending priorities and rules in 2009-10.

This meeting includes some of the key planners and organizers of FP7 at the Commission, including Clara de la Torre, Director, DG Research, European Commission, Waldemar Kütt, deputy chef de cabinet to EU Science and Research Commission Janez Potocnik. It is part of the Science|Business Policy Bridge, a series of exclusive, inside-Brussels meetings focused on EU innovation and R&D policies and programmes. The outcome of this thought-provoking exchange of views will be a special report by Science|Business, that will set the stage for a set of specific policy recommendations for publication later in 2008.

Workshop Rationale
The Gowers Report in 2006 made a number of recommendations for the better management and exploitation of Intellectual Property within UK. One of these was that the UK Intellectual Property Office took the lead in encouraging SME’s to make greater use of licensing. Over the last 18 months a working group comprised of people from industry, licensing professionals and staff from UKIPO has considered how UKIPO can best fulfil the Gowers remit. The first stage has been the production of a booklet to assist businesses and intermediaries who are not particularly
skilled in licensing. The booklet was published in September. These workshops are intended to give intermediaries a better understanding of licensing in order that they may better advise their clients.

Learning objectives

The workshop will not turn intermediaries into licensing professionals in one day! The aim is to give intermediaries an insight into the business advantages of licensing (both in and out) for SME’s, to familiarise them with the booklet and suggest how they can best use it for their own benefit and that of their clients. This will be achieved in a workshop environment by means of attendees working through a number of real life scenarios with the help of the booklet and then
discussing possible outcomes. Attendees will also be introduced to the next stages in UKIPO’s programme.

Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed primarily at individuals in intermediary businesses such as lawyers, accountants, patent and trade mark attorneys and banks who would not class themselves as ‘licensing professionals’. Also advisors in Business Links, RDA’s and Enterprise Agencies as well as the ‘business facing’ departments of HEI’s. Whilst individual businesses may be accepted it is envisaged that a further series of workshops, aimed more specifically at the business, will be run at a later date.

This event focuses on the biomass and biofuels market, with comprehensive coverage of policy, market and technological developments. This year’s event will feature more plenary sessions, facilitating debate on areas of common interest, whilst retaining the scope to focus on sector specific issues. The main themes to

This is a FREE dissemination and public dialogue showcase event looking at what is
